Walking Through Depression
Depression sucks. It is not easy, and I will not tell you that it is. In fact, I want to take a moment to apologize for being out so long from writing another post. I have been struggling through an episode and am finally coming up out of it. It has been a long while since I have had one this severe; thankfully the medicine increase I had is taking effect and making me feel much like myself again.
In today’s world, there is a lot of information on how to prevent and treat depression as well as mental illnesses as a whole. I try to provide as much of that here as I can to help because I know that it does help. But I wanted to take a little bit of a different approach this time in how I talk about depression because sometimes the answer is not what other things we can do. First, I want to remind you all that depression is not always sadness; sometimes it is happiness on the outside and feeling empty on the inside. For many people who work full time and/or go to school it is not them walking around in a daze and sad look in their eye and face. Depression does not have a “normal” look.
For those of you who are functioning in your work life but going home with complete apathy and a strong desire to numb out your mind by TV or just going to sleep, I see you and know you are out there. You are not alone. Some of you have children and get through the day as much as possible but go to bed and hope that tomorrow you will feel better and I want you to know that you are also not alone. Many of you have chronic physical illnesses which leave you unable to do what you once could and feel like you have nothing to look forward to, but you are also not alone. No matter what level of depression you are going through or why, you are important and so is your life.
This post is not to tell you all of the things you need to do such as go exercise and change your diet. What I am here to remind you of today is that you only need to take care of yourself for the next 5 minutes, and then that 5 minutes when it gets here, and the next until you make it through the day. Some moments in life are just not fun; they are hard, intrusive, painful moments. Take it one day at a time and love yourself where you are at.
